The P-8A is based on a modified Boeing 737-800 which means it's more fuel efficient and aerodynamic than earlier models. The P-8A MMA design is based on the fuselage of the 737-800 and wings of the 737-900. The 737-900 style wings are constructed with hardpoints for carrying air-to-surface missiles.

Nearly 100 U.S. Navy people in dress whites swarmed excitedly under Boeing’s new light gray P-8A Thursday morning, kicking the tires of the aircraft at the end of a Renton rollout ceremony while a brass band played. The Navy is slated to buy 117 of the maritime and patrol aircraft, which are derived from a 737 fuselage delivered straight from Wichita, Kan. The P-8A aircraft contains sophisticated detection equipment and weaponry that are designed to find and sink submarines that could threaten aircraft carriers. The complete P-8A program will be worth more than $40 billion, and will replace the fleet of 154 P3s so old that 48 of them are currently grounded while receiving wing repairs, said Moran.
