             Traveling SW, Sighted land. About 1100 I saw an explosion. Hear a hole large enough to drive large trucks
           through were made. Diary page 22. 

           USS Patuxent (AO-44)
on fire as a result of an internal explosion in the paint locker on the foc'sle while off
           Iwo Jima, 17 February 1945 two days prior to the invasion on 19 February 1945. From: Navsource

           1340 General quarters: 4 planes spotted skimming water, listened to radio, heard orders being
           given - reconnaissance

0700  USS Schuylkill AO-76 detached from Task unit 50.8.5.
0746  USS Callaghan DD-792
[80] came alongside strbd. 0836 Cast off receiving 809 brls. of fuel oil.
             Fate Sunk by Japanese Aircraft off Okinawa July 28 1945.
                         47 of her crew were lost with the ship and remain on duty.


0748  USS Pasadena CL-65
[81] came along side port. 0917 Cast off receiving 7,245brls. of fuel oil & 1,450 gal. Ave. Gas.
           From Pasadena, Lt. W. T. Peale reporting aboard with records and baggage
           for further transfer to Pearl Harbor, Oahu for duty.
0900  USS Preston DD-795
[82] came along side port. 0949 Cast off receiving 1,065 brls.
0958  USS Cassin Young DD-793
[83] came alongside strbd.  1044 Cast off receiving 957 brls fuel oil & 37.9 brls. diesel oil.

[84]came alongside port. 1329 Cast off receiving 15,500 brls. fuel oil & 99,500 gal. Ave. Gas.

1350  Delivered Officer Messenger mail to USS Reynolds DE-42.

0926  USS Cimarron AO-22 came along side port to discharge balance cargo. 
Lt. W. T. Peale was transfered to AO-22.
           1320 Completed receiving 115,637 gal. Ave Gas; & receiving 17, 040 brls. fuel oil.
           1628 Completed receiving 6,040 brls. diesel oil. 1640 Cast off.  1645 Secured from fueling detail.
1107  USS Mitchell DE-43 [85] came alongside strbd. 1145 Shoved off received Messenger Mail for USS Detroit CL-8.
1703  Changed speed to 12 knots. changed course to 069 T. 1748 Formed column open order.
2353  Sounded General quarters. 2358 all stations manned and ready.
