AUGUST - 1944

  Friday 25 August - 1944
Bethlehem Steel Shipyards Inc., Sparrow's Point, Baltimore, Maryland, Hull #4408 with USS Taluga precommissioning detail at Pier #2. At 1400 this date the commissioning party, consisting of the Assistant Industrial Manager, Norfolk Navy Yard and other Naval Oficers, their wives and guests, moved aft to the speakers platform on the after Cargo Deck.  All officers and men, their families and guests were formed for the commissioning ceremony.  At 1410 Chaplain James T. Wayland, Lt (jg) (ChC) invoked the aid of the Almighty in the behalf of theis Manager, Norfolk Navy Yard ordered the USS Taluga placed in full commission.  the bugler played "To The Colors" and the ensign, jack and commission pennant were properly unfurled.  At 1425 after reading his orders, Bu Pers Despatch 071050 of June 1944, Lieutenant Commander H. W. Mikkelsen, USNR Assumed command.  At 1430 the watch was set and the Navigator took the first watch.  At the time of commissioning the following officers were attached to the USS Taluga:        View the actual LOG FOR AUGUST 1944

1510 Rockwell, E.J. Jr. AerM3c USNR reported aboard for duty with  bag, hammock, records and accounts.
1720 Kafka, J. BM2c USNR was injured by a falling boom on the port side of the Cargo Deck while practicing with boom operations.  The ship's doctor accomplished first aid and sent him  U.S. Naval Hospital, Annapolis.

Saturday - 26 August 1944
 Moored starboard side to the north side of Pier #2 with 7 wire cables. Boiler #1 steaming for auxiliary 
 purposes.

 0715  Cut in boilers #1,2,3 and 4 on the main steam line.
 0755  Made all preparations for getting underway.
 0800  The tug "Maryland" came along side to port.
 0810  Pilot George Mister came aboard.
 0840  The tug "Chester" came along side to port.

  Get underway for Port Covington, Baltimore, Md.
 
Standard speed 15 knots, on various courses to
 
conform to the channel. Passed Fort Carrol Light
  to starboard, about 200 yards.
  Moored to Pier #9, Port Covington with wire cables.
  Secured boilers 1,3, and 4. #2 steaming.
  Commenced loading stores.
  Reagan, J.K. SK3c USNR reported aboard for duty
 
with
bag, hammock, records and accounts.
  Received supplies: 160 loaves of bread, 15 gallons
 
ice cream, 20 gallons Milk.

Sunday - 27 August 1944
Receiving Telephone Service and fresh water from the dock.  Commenced taking weather readings having received barometer, psychrometer and thermometer on board.

Monday - 28 August 1944
0850  Commenced fueling ship. Draft of ship fwd-16'9" amid-17'11" aft-19'2". Continued loading stores.
1130  Completed fuelingship, having received 147,672 gals of fuel oil. Draft fwd-16' amid-18'1" aft-20'3".

Tuesday - 29 August 1944
0800  Tested general alarm. Continued loading stores.
1100  The Captain held mast for 4 men with punishments with loss of liberties or restriction.

Thurston, C.E. S2c, USNR reported aboard  for duty with bag, hammock, records and accounts.

Wednesday - 30 August 1944
0945  Edwards S.E. F2c, USNR - Haag, H.E. CSK(PA) - was transferred off ship for various reasons.

Thursday - 31 August 1944
1014  Commenced taking on salt water for ballast.
1400  Completed taking on ballast, draft of ship fwd-22'0" amid-23'0" aft-24'0".
1420  Lit off boilers #1 and #2.
1505  Exercised at General Quarters.     1540 Secured from General Quarters.
1545  Exersised at abandon ship drill.     1605 Secured from abandon ship drill.
2320  Discontinued fresh water service from dock.
2330  Mr. J.W. Facht, Mr. Walter Matz, Mr. D.V. Bailey came aboard for passage to Norfolk, Va.
